until i stop being lazy..

I’ve been out of my photography game for the moment, so these halfass iPhone shots will have to do.. I got my hubs relaced with HED Belgium C2 rims! The Belgium’s are 24mm deep and 23mm wide. It seems there’s a slight pitch to wider width wheels with the understanding that a wider rim = less sidewall deformity and less of the lightbulb shape = aero-er and a better ride. All of the above? Yes please. I’ll do a writeup about WheelBuilder soon. They’ve built me five wheelsets so far, and I have nothing but damn good things to say about them.

who the.. what the..

What the hell is that smell?! Ohhhhh, that’s my sad excuse for LEGS, aka sacksofshit. While they’ve never been magnificent chiseled trunks of unstoppable locomotion, they’ve usually been know to handle their own on the track or anything that required some sort of sprint (on the flats of course, because, who’s heard of anything Hella Fools!!! related moving fast uphill?!). My riding this year has totaled a whopping 59 miles! I think that might include the few couple hundred feet I spent trying to get my Garmin to recognize my cadence monitor.. and then there was that one time I used my bike as a prop for a film short at work. Let’s round it up to a complete 60 then. 60 glorious miles since the 2009 Gran Fondo. To be fair (according to RangsiWHAAT, these are also called “excuses”), I don’t have anything planned until October 2010, and I wanted to get all my tattoo work out of the way this year so I can properly focus on triathlon training this year and next. I’ve got one last session in mid-May, and hopefully that’ll be it until the next tattoo. That mean’s I can officially start “riding” in June, [...]

and then there was…

nothing. But by nothing, I mean, not the absence of substance, but the absence of movement. And by the absence of movement, I mean, no site redesign as of yet. SLOWASS. I know. Believe me, if it’s anything I know, it’s slow. Let’s pretend this site redesign is like me climbing your average 7 mile/30 minute climb (yes, I know that adds up to 3 mph.. I KNOW). It’s not particularly painful, but you know it’s just going to be a slugfest between your ass and that 6% grade. Now the question is, bright and happy? Or dark and brooding. This has been a slow year in terms of Hella Fools!!! related news, events, happenings and such. For the winter, we all switched to snowboarding, which, I wish was more fruitful when it came to fitness, but to be honest, it was more for fun. Fun. That’s isn’t something that’s been thrown around very much in the past few years. Most times, anything described as “fun”, was done so retroactively. In hindsight, if you will, since nothing about training and riding and forming the ass-callous is fun, until you look back on it with fond doe eyes and laugh about [...]

Stank you very much

Oh cheese and grits, it’s been a stankuva long time since we last updated. Let’s hope for the best year yet. Coming up soon – a slight site redesign (read: new theme, new colors, new suckas), reviews, events (Hello, Hella Fools!!! completed 2009 Seattle-to-Portland ride, 204 miles), and more content. Things have been busy for Hella Fools, but rest assured, we’re still here, and still fools, hella. -HF

parts, ordeals, wheels and danish cookies

given that march came much more quickly than it ever has in previous years, there was some strange compulsion to do an “early” season ride this year.. solvang century. training the past few weeks was rough, given the rain and cold temperatures (yeah yeah, i know! we live in california. relativity, schmelativity, riding in 40 degree weather while its raining sucks.. wherever you’re at.) a week before the ride, i FINALLY got my wheel issues resolved (see previous post), and everything was coming together. rangsiwan, benito and i headed down to solvang friday afternoon after me spending 20 minutes sweating on top of their car trying to get my yakima wheel fork mounted, only to realize it wouldn’t fit the wheel once my bike was mounted onto the tray. great. never try anything new before a ride. and that includes new wheel mounting techniques. we stopped by some ramen joint in san jose to get a quick lunch for the apparently 4 hour ride down (why didn’t i know that solvang was closer to los angeles than it was to the bay when i signed up?). ill let you in on a little secret. eating soup will sometimes give me [...]

training and withdrawal. in the same post.

in my last post, i started 2009 with that sort of happy-go-lucky good feeling that usually accompanies a new day, a new purchase, or being high. 3 months later, how do i feel? still good. fortunately! i started training earlier this year, mostly because i signed up to do the solvang century on march 14. i dont think i’ve ever done an event this early in the year. in fact, my first event in 2008 was the tierra bella 100k in april, and even then, it was early to my standards. i didnt start riding until mid march.. suffice to say it was one of the most painful rides ive done. what i did different this year my first training ride was january 17th. the previous three weeks were spent recovering from a bad cold and cough that kept me sidelined. i started out with a fair base from the gym workous, mostly weights and cardio. the rides were slow and easy. not just slow, but slooooowwww. i didn’t bother hitting the hills until the 5th ride out. i increased distance each week but about 20%.. twice what i usually increase by, but the stress of a march ride got [...]

blowing my mind

sometimes i attempt to do things haphazardly.. especially when working with software or applications because i figured theres always a way to undo things (as long as you dont trash a file). well. this time i almost proved myself wrong. i tried to change the site url, and ZOIKS.. error 500. oh sons of bitches. i tried feverishly to restore from older backups, not really knowing what the hell i really did, or how id fix it (i said i was a programmer, not a webmaster HA, kidding). a panicked hour later, i ended up searcing for ‘wordpress misconfiguration’. i came up with a few good forum posts, but none with a valid solution. eventually giving into despair i started the multiple word google search. you all know what im talking about. when nothing seems to work, you start searching for “computer does not work please help me”. well. i eventually ran into the solution, and ill post it here, because one day i may make the same mistake again. http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL amen, people. amen. (and look out for a site redesign.. you know, like one that has a little bit of effort put into it)

2009

awwww shit. 2009. happy new years yall. dont get me wrong, im not exactly the new years celebrating kinda type with 2009 glasses on, goofy hat and noisemakers, but i can understand ushering in a new year because its a larger than normal symbol of new opportunity. larger than normal because everyday should be a new opportunity, but the dailies are just that.. daily. they lack a little “POW, SUCKAS!” while the new year allows for that hit we all need. so what, one fool might ask of themselves.. what the hell should i do? im not saying go foolish and run a marathon (even though it might be hella fools nature to sign up anyway), but do something special. its like that burrito that holds a special place in your heart. its there because its an opportunity that doesnt come around often, but when it does, youre willing to knock a punkass over for it and take their burrito at the same time. all im sayin is be the burrito. be special. be that new opportunity because this shit doesnt come around often, so youve got to be focused and in the moment every single chance you get. that [...]
